SEVERE VERBAL DYSPRAXIA:
A Mother’s Point of View
My son, Benjamin, has been undergoing speech therapy for five months now with therapist Kathleen Toth. He has been in therapy for almost two years altogether, with amazing improvements under Kathy’s supervision.
As hard as Ben tried to communicate, people used to ignore him because they couldn’t understand him. Since his recent improvements people are now listening to him.
To be able to communicate opens up so many doors for a child.
His confidence is soaring! His personality is constantly expanding. He is so proud of himself and so happy he sings all the time now. You see, he couldn’t sing very well before.
This is Ben’s second year of preschool. Last year his teacher would have to send notes home about what happened because Ben could not tell me. Now he tells me every detail about his exciting day at preschool! He also has more friends and makes them easier with his new speaking abilities. Ben certainly has a LOT of questions that need to be answered, and he is learning so much every day. He wants to know if monsters and zombies are real. In the past, we couldn’t understand that question to answer it for him. It’s a real nightmare for a child to have a bad dream and not be able to explain it so he can be comforted. In the past, when he sat on Santa’s lap, he could not be understood when he told Santa what he wanted for Christmas. This year will be different. Imagine wanting something specific but not being able to communicate it or desiring a specific food and not being able to ask for it. He gets what he asks for now.
At almost five years old, he can finally tattle on his big sisters (as children sometimes do), relay messages, tell me when he’s not feeling well and what the problem is. As a mother I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what my son is saying and what he needs. His recent improvements have been something like a miracle and my husband and I are so very grateful to Kathy for his breakthrough. It is now much easier to instill in him good manners and a positive attitude.
Ben can now answer the phone and be understood; he loves to do that. It makes him feel important. He talks and asks questions and doesn’t stop talking from the time he wakes up until he goes to bed. He has so much talking to catch up on!
Ben previously attended a different speech therapist who didn’t specialize in children for fourteen months with very slow progress. In only five months Kathy has made amazing progress and opened up a whole new world for our son. With Kathy’s help, some homework, and Ben’s strong will to learn, I believe he will be an excellent speaker soon.
Thank you so very much to Kathy and Peggy for their hard work and dedication to my son, Ben.
